Yoga and strength training are often presented as opposites: one is about flexibility and calm, the other about heavy weights and effort. In reality they complement each other very well, and many strong people find that a regular yoga practice makes their lifting better.
To squat deep, press overhead or pull from the floor with good position, you need enough mobility to get into those shapes. If the range is not there, the body finds it somewhere else – usually the lower back or the shoulders. Yoga works through the hips, thoracic spine and shoulders in a slow, controlled way, helping you access positions that your lifts depend on.
Good yoga is not about passively hanging in end range. Holding a warrior pose, a low lunge or a balance demands active control, which builds stability in exactly the positions that heavy training can expose. Flexibility you can control is far more useful under a barbell than flexibility you cannot.
Yoga places a strong emphasis on the breath. Learning to breathe fully into the ribcage and belly translates directly into better bracing under load – and the slower breathing used at the end of a session is a simple, effective way to help the body switch from training mode into recovery.
Hard training needs easier days around it. A yoga session keeps you moving, improves circulation and lets you work on mobility without adding much fatigue, so you arrive at your next strength session feeling better rather than more beaten up.
We run yoga in Wetherby in a dedicated room at our Victoria Street studio, alongside our strength and conditioning and personal training. If you would like to see how the two could work together for you, request a free consult.
